Reading Time Calculator
Estimate reading time from word count and a reading speed you choose.
Estimate reading time
Method
The calculator treats each non-empty whitespace-separated token as one word. Estimated minutes equal word count divided by the selected words-per-minute rate. The same duration is also converted into rounded whole seconds for a more concrete minutes-and-seconds display.
Worked example
A 400-word passage at 200 words per minute has an estimated reading time of 2.00 minutes.
Why the speed is adjustable
There is no single reading rate that fits every person or document. Technical material, unfamiliar vocabulary, proofreading, reading aloud, and accessibility needs can all change the time required. An adjustable rate makes the arithmetic visible instead of presenting one speed as universal.
Privacy
The text and reading-speed setting are processed locally in the browser.
Limitations
This is a simple estimate, not a measurement of an individual reader. The word-count rule is whitespace based, so languages and writing systems that do not normally separate words with spaces can require a different tokenizer.
