Word Counter
Count words, characters, characters without whitespace, and lines using a clear browser-local counting rule.
Count your text
What this tool counts as a word
For this tool, a word is a non-empty token separated from the next token by whitespace. This is an operational counting rule, not a linguistic word-boundary analysis. Different editors can produce different totals for hyphenated expressions, apostrophes, emoji, or languages that do not normally separate words with spaces.
Worked example
Text: Practical tools save time.
Expected result: 4 words and 26 characters including spaces and punctuation.
Why counts can differ between applications
Software can define a “word” differently. This page makes its rule explicit so the result can be interpreted consistently. If an assignment, publisher, or platform specifies a particular counting method, use that method for the official limit.
Limitations
This is a whitespace-token counter, not a language-specific tokenizer. Hyphenated terms, apostrophes, emoji, punctuation, and languages that do not normally separate words with spaces can produce totals that differ from other software.
Privacy
The text is counted locally in the browser. The tool does not need to transmit the text to a server to calculate these totals.
Common questions
Do multiple spaces create extra words?
No. Consecutive whitespace is treated as a separator rather than as empty words.
Does punctuation count as a character?
Yes. The character total includes punctuation. The “without whitespace” total removes whitespace but retains punctuation.
