How the Final Grade Calculator works
This tool uses a weighted-grade assumption. Your current grade is treated as the grade for the portion of the course that comes before the final exam. The final exam then contributes its stated percentage of the overall course grade.
For example, if the final exam is worth 30% of the course, the current grade represents the remaining 70% for this calculation.
Required final exam grade = [Target grade − (Current grade × Non-final weight)] ÷ Final exam weight
The weights are used as decimals in the calculation. A final exam worth 30% has a final weight of 0.30 and a non-final weight of 0.70.
Worked example
Current grade: 82%
Target course grade: 85%
Final exam weight: 30%
The non-final portion of the course is 70%.
Current-grade contribution: 82 × 0.70 = 57.40
Remaining percentage points needed: 85 − 57.40 = 27.60
Required final score: 27.60 ÷ 0.30 = 92%
Under this weighting assumption, a student with an 82% current grade would need a 92% final-exam score to finish the course with an 85% overall grade.
How to interpret the result
Required score between 0% and 100%
The target can be reached within a standard 0–100 final-exam scale if the assumptions entered into the calculator match the course grading method.
Required score above 100%
A result above 100% means the target cannot be reached on a standard 0–100 final-exam scale under the entered assumptions. Extra credit or another grading adjustment could change the actual situation if the course allows it.
Required score of 0%
If the mathematical requirement is zero or below, the target grade is already secured under this weighting model even with a 0% score on the final.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Entering the percentage already completed instead of the percentage specifically assigned to the final exam.
- Using a current grade that already includes a projected or placeholder final-exam score.
- Assuming every course uses the same weighted-grade method.
- Ignoring extra credit, dropped assignments, category weights, minimum exam requirements, or other rules stated in the syllabus.
- Treating the calculator result as an official grade rather than checking it against the instructor or institution’s grading rules.
