Free statistics tool
Statistics Calculator
Calculate mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation, quartiles, and other descriptive statistics from a list of numbers.
Calculate descriptive statistics
Enter numbers separated by commas, spaces, tabs, semicolons, or new lines. The calculation runs in your browser.
What this Statistics Calculator does
This Statistics Calculator summarizes a numerical data set using common descriptive statistics. It can calculate count, sum, mean, median, mode, minimum, maximum, range, quartiles, interquartile range, variance, and standard deviation.
Descriptive statistics help summarize a data set, but they do not explain causation or prove that a sample represents a larger population. Review your data source, sample size, and assumptions before relying on the results.
How the calculations work
The mean is the average value. The median is the middle value after sorting the data. The mode is the value or values that appear most often. The range is the maximum value minus the minimum value.
Population variance and population standard deviation treat the entered values as the full population. Sample variance and sample standard deviation use the n – 1 correction and are commonly used when the entered values are a sample from a larger population.
Common uses
- Summarizing classroom, research, or spreadsheet data.
- Checking the average and spread of a small data set.
- Comparing mean, median, and mode.
- Finding standard deviation for basic statistical analysis.
Important limitation
This calculator is for informational and educational use only. It does not verify whether your data is complete, representative, normally distributed, unbiased, or appropriate for a specific statistical test.
FAQ
Should I use sample or population standard deviation?
Use population standard deviation when your numbers represent the complete population you want to describe. Use sample standard deviation when your numbers are only a sample from a larger group.
Can I paste spreadsheet values?
Yes. You can paste values separated by commas, spaces, tabs, semicolons, or new lines.
Why does the calculator show both sample and population standard deviation?
They answer slightly different questions. Population standard deviation divides by n. Sample standard deviation divides by n – 1 to adjust for estimating variation from a sample.
Does this calculator upload my data?
This MVP version is designed to calculate results locally in your browser. Do not paste sensitive personal, medical, financial, legal, or confidential data into any online tool unless you understand how that tool handles data.
