Aspect ratio

Enter a diagonal and aspect ratio.

Method

The aspect ratio defines a right triangle whose horizontal and vertical legs are proportional to the ratio values. Dividing the diagonal by the square root of ratio-width squared plus ratio-height squared gives a scale factor. Multiplying each ratio component by that scale gives the ideal physical width and height.

Worked example

A 24-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio is approximately 20.92 inches wide and 11.77 inches high.

When this is useful

This is useful for desk planning, display comparisons, layout mockups, projector/screen planning, and understanding how the same diagonal can produce different width and height under different aspect ratios.

Privacy

The dimensions are calculated entirely in the browser. No device or room measurements are sent elsewhere.

Limitations

The result assumes a flat ideal rectangle. It does not include bezels, rounded corners, curvature, manufacturer tolerances, or actual viewable-area differences. It also does not calculate pixel density.

FAQ

Does this include the bezel?

No. The calculation describes an ideal rectangular display area from the diagonal and aspect ratio, not the outer chassis dimensions.

Does resolution affect the physical width and height?

Not in this calculation. Resolution and pixel density affect pixel size and sharpness, while this tool uses only diagonal length and aspect ratio.
