Interest Rate Calculator
Estimate the nominal APR implied by a fixed loan principal, monthly payment, and term.
Method
The calculator numerically solves the standard fixed-payment loan equation for the monthly interest rate using bounded bisection, then reports nominal APR as monthly rate × 12. If the payment equals principal ÷ number of payments, the implied rate is 0%.
Worked example
A $10,000 principal repaid with 36 monthly payments of $299.71 implies a nominal APR of approximately 5.0002%. The slight difference from exactly 5% comes from entering a payment rounded to cents.
When this is useful
Useful when you know a loan principal, fixed payment, and term and want to estimate the nominal interest rate implied by those cash flows.
Privacy
The values you enter into this calculator are processed in your browser by Practical Tools Hub application assets. The calculator does not need to send your calculation inputs to a third-party calculation service.
Limitations
The result excludes lender fees and therefore is not necessarily the regulatory APR disclosed by a lender. It assumes equal monthly payments and a fixed interest rate. It does not model irregular cash flows, balloon payments, or variable rates.
