Hash Generator
Generate SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 hexadecimal digests in your browser.
Generate a hash
Method
The tool encodes the entered JavaScript string as UTF-8 bytes with TextEncoder, passes those bytes to the browser Web Crypto digest function, and converts the resulting byte array to lowercase hexadecimal. SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 produce different fixed-length digests for the same input.
Worked example
For the text hello, SHA-256 returns 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824. The same input produces different digest lengths under SHA-384 and SHA-512.
When this is useful
Hashes are useful for checksum comparisons, reproducible identifiers, integrity checks, debugging, and development workflows where a deterministic digest of text is needed.
Privacy
The text is encoded and hashed locally with browser cryptography. This page does not send the entered text to a hashing API.
Limitations
A hash is not encryption and cannot be decrypted. A simple SHA digest is also not a password-storage scheme. The result depends on the exact UTF-8 text, including capitalization, whitespace, and Unicode characters.
FAQ
Is a hash the same as encryption?
No. A cryptographic hash is a one-way digest used for integrity checks and identifiers; there is no decryption key that restores the original text.
Can I use this to store passwords?
This page intentionally does not implement password-storage schemes. Password storage normally requires dedicated password-hashing designs with salts and work factors rather than a single general-purpose SHA digest.
