Inflation Calculator – Compare Purchasing Power Over Time

Compare the purchasing power of a dollar amount between years using U.S. CPI-U values. Complete years use annual CPI averages. The 2026 value is a current-year preliminary value based on the latest included monthly CPI-U reading, not a completed annual average.

Current-year note: 2026 is included using the latest embedded monthly CPI-U value available in this MVP: June 2026 CPI-U all items = 333.952. July 2026 CPI had not been released at the time this page was prepared. The 2026 result should be treated as preliminary until a full-year 2026 annual average is available.

What this Inflation Calculator does

This tool estimates how much money in one year would have similar purchasing power in another year. It is designed for quick education and comparison, not for official financial decisions.

How inflation adjustment works

The calculator multiplies the starting amount by the ratio of the end-year CPI index to the start-year CPI index.

Adjusted value = amount × (CPI in end year ÷ CPI in start year)

Data source and update note

This MVP uses a manually embedded U.S. CPI-U table for recent years. Years 2010–2025 use complete-year annual CPI average values. Year 2026 uses the latest embedded monthly CPI-U value, June 2026 = 333.952, and is marked preliminary/current-year. Review and update this table when newer official BLS values are released.

Purchasing power example

If prices rise over time, the same dollar amount usually buys less in the later year. For example, $100 in an earlier year may require a higher number of dollars in a later year to represent similar purchasing power.

Limitations

  • CPI is an average index and may not match your personal spending pattern.
  • Regional prices, housing costs, taxes, and product quality changes can differ from the national average.
  • 2026 is a preliminary current-year comparison until a complete annual average becomes available.
  • This MVP currently uses a static table; automated BLS data updates can be added later.

FAQ

Is this financial advice?

No. This is an educational calculator. It should not be used as investment, tax, legal, or official financial advice.

Why does 2026 say preliminary?

Because the full 2026 annual CPI average is not available until the year is complete. This calculator uses the latest embedded monthly CPI-U value for a current-year estimate.

Why is July 2026 not used yet?

At the time this MVP page was prepared, the latest included official CPI-U value was June 2026. Update the table when the next official value is available.

Why do inflation calculators vary?

They may use different CPI series, monthly versus annual values, seasonally adjusted versus not seasonally adjusted values, rounding rules, or update dates.
